The Ghost Rider

Based on a legend story from my country, Albania. The story gives a strong message about besa (Albanian word),a word which is strong related with Albanian character. Besa is a promise that can never be broken, essentially a person's most sacred oath.

Main characters on this story are: the mother, Doruntine(the daughter) , Costandine(the brother). My intention is to create a costume that involves different stages of transformation, referring to essential points that story presents. Costandine is related with the promise he made to his mother, he is not allowed to die completely until he brings Doruntine back home to the mother. Only after this act he can be released from his mother’s curse. I want the costume to present all three of characters, because all of them are connected to each other.

The costume reflect the death, the promise and the life, in the same way as the Costandine’s journey, coming from death, meeting with life(Doruntine), and fulfill his promise to be released.

The performance will develop in three stages of costumes :

1- Costandine’s state, he is dead. Sculpture structure, that can limit the movement because he is dead. The structure, as a solid figure is his tomb that can be split in two pieces, which referred as two other characters, his mother and his sister. The asymmetric shape of the structures and the resemble with corset indicate to woman figure, also different sizes of the sculpture structures invoke the mother on the big piece and the sister on the small structure.

2-The promise that he has to keep. My symbolic for the promise will be the knot, a coat with big knots. The knot is the symbol of the problem that he has to solve to relief himself from his mother’s curse. On the other hand, there are three knots. Each one of them beside the problem that Costandine must solve to keep the promise, they illustrate the three characters and the strong connection that they have, the family relation. There is another knot on his back, as a mark of the problem he carries to keep his promise and to keep the family together. He can be in peace only if he fulfil his promise.

3-Fulfill the promise. After he unknot the costume he is relief and has fulfil his promise. He can be in peace to return in his grave. He is back in his identity, as a solder wearing an Albanian traditional wear, with fustanella, decorative waistcoat and gaiters.
